Handspun Yarn - made in Prestwick, Ayrshire

from £8.95

Beautiful Handspun yarn made right here in Prestwick by Seanmhair’s Shed. (‘Seanmhair’ is Gaelic for ‘granny’, and is pronounced ‘shen-a-var’)

The fibre combinations make for subtle differences between the yarns. Merino is used for softness next to the skin. Sari silk for its vibrant colours. BFL (blue faced leicester) for its silky staple. Corriedale for strength. Stellina for sparkle. Silk for drape, luxury and depth of colour. Falkland for softness. Shetland for warmth.

Jade Apple DK - Spun from Corriedale and Merino yarn and dyed by the spinner, this luscious 2 ply alternates between turquoise and green olive. Overall this knits knits up as a DK yarn, although the slight slubbiness would lend itself to any textured 4 ply or sportweight pattern. One skein would make a gorgeous cowl or hat, two or three for a fabulous shawl. Handwash only, this yarn may bleed on first wash so it is advised to block garment before use. 100% pure wool (corriedale/merino mix), 180m per 100g. 20-24 sts and 28-36 rows per 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25mm -4 mm needles.

Purple Cerise Sport - This mixture of Corriedale and repurposed Sari Silk is a glorious blend of deep purple and cerise pink, with some extra spots of colour blended in from the silk. Wonderfully textured and soft. Very wearable. Some colour loss on first wash so please block before wearing. 150m per 50g skein. Handwash only. Tension between 22-26 sts and 30-38 rows per 10 cm square dependent on needle size.

Autumn Sock - Another lovely handspun, with some amazing colours spun together! This Falkland and Shetland mix has rusty browns, orange, pale grey, moss green, dark brown beautifully spun in two plies, with colours changing throughout. A finely spun yarn, ideal for lighter garments, or accessories. There’s a generous 450m per 100g skein, and this would benefit from handwashing only. Use 2mm - 2.5mm for socks, and larger sizes for shawls etc.

Spearmint Sock - This is a beautiful minty greeny-blue, hard to capture on the computer screen. There are streaks of turquoise, pistachio, apple green, and teal mixed in throughout this gorgeous spearmint-coloured yarn. There’s 460m per 100g, making for generous socks, and one skein will make a small shawl.Spun in two plies, and very squishy, the Corriedale makes this a hardy knit for socks, so don’t worry about the lack of nylon. Handwash only. Knit on 2mm-2.5mm for socks, and any gauge you like for shawls :)

Navy Rust Sport - An unusual colour marl effect, but a striking one. The navy/purple ply is twined with an orange and gold shade that looks like the last gasp of sunset fading to dark night - so pretty! These skeins are only 50g in weight, but have a length of 150m, making this a perfect 4 ply thickness yarn. Hand wash only. Perfect for small projects like gloves, mittens, hats, socks, anywhere you want a super-cosy extremity!

Faded Pink 4 ply - This glorious tweed-effect handspun yarn feels amazing in the skein! It’s made up of 70% Merino wool, and 30% silk, with a fantastic 400m per 100g skein. This knits as a 4 ply weight, but is a two-stranded yarn, which makes the subtle colour marl show up as a very light tweed effect. The colours are light pinks, pale brick, a touch of lilac, with a beutiful sheen and very slight halo. This yarn is a quiet luxury. It whispers quality. So very pretty

Pinky Purple 4 ply - A pot-pourri of rose shades make up this luxury Shetland, Sari Silk and Merino mix. The base shades are rose and shell pink, and the sari silk throw in some stunning jewel-like speckles, in purple, orange, turquoise, slate, royal, gold and green. There is 420m in a skein, and with three skeins in stock, there would be enough for a garment - which would really bring out the complexity of the yarn. It would be stunning in a shawl, or a sweep of fabric. Shetland wool 33%, merino 33%, Sari silk 34% 420m per 100g skein. Needle size 2.5mm - 4mm. Hand wash only.

Subtle Sparkle Sock - this sock weight yarn is so quiet you’d be forgiven for thinking it has nothing much to say, but a closer look reveals a rich combination of colours and sparkle. It’s soft as silk with a subtle turquoise stellina fibre sunning through it. 80% merino, 20% stellina, 400m approx per 100g skein. Handwash and appreciate.

Peony Sock - an equal mix of blue Faced Leicester and superfine merino makes for a soft squishy 2 ply yarn. Shading bright pink ombre with a natural partner, there is 410m per 100g skein and it is ideal for shawls, lightweight knitwear or accessories. Handwash to get the best from this luxury feel yarn.

Ocean Sock - this is a fun mix of blues and aquas, shading from palest surf through to deep ocean. This three fibre mix is perfect for all kinds of fine knitting. 420m per 200g skein, 45% BFL, 45% corriedale, 10% merino. Sock weight. Handwash for best results.
